Grade 1-2 with Ms. Goldman
Welcome Letter
Dear Families,
Welcome to first and second grade! I’m so excited to have some new and familiar faces in 1/2 this school year! For those of you that don’t know me, this is my second year at North Hero School. I grew up in Colchester, VT and went to UVM. I know this year is going to look very different, but it’s going to be a great year!
I want to share some general information about what it’s going to look like in 1/2 and some things to expect for this year. After back to school night, I will be sending some more information home about our schedule and some academic expectations. This letter is to give you background on the day-to-day basics of the 1/2 classroom.
Students will be using google classroom to access work for online days. Your student was sent a google classroom invite to their school gmail account, please make sure to check it and join the class! In addition, Hannah Pelkey will be available as the online interventionist this year! She will be available to help with anything during online days.
Students should have a few clean masks with them at school every day. They are welcome to keep their extra masks in their backpack or at their desks. Masks will go home with each student every day as well to be cleaned. I encourage you, if you haven’t already, to have your student practice wearing a mask!
Students are going to have their own set of materials, including an iPad. Students are responsible for bringing these materials to and from school each day (some materials will stay at home). There will also be a yellow parent/school communication folder that will go home towards the end of the week and will need to be returned the following Monday.
Students should be bringing in their own snack this year. I am requesting that any snacks you bring are low sugar, non-dessert snacks. I will have extra snacks in the classroom for students that don’t have snack for the day.
Lunch time will be held in the classroom this year. We have a refrigerator and microwave in the classroom for students to use if they choose to bring their own lunch. You can also buy lunch through the school if you choose to sign up.
Your student should bring a water bottle to and from school every day. There will not be access to the water fountain, but we will have a filter for them to fill up water bottles in the classroom. Students should bring water bottles home with them at the end of the day. Water is the only drink allowed to bring to school.
The morning routine will also look different this year. Students will come directly to the classroom when they get to school in the morning. They will have some free time before the school day starts. Students will have a variety of options here, but if they want to bring in one, non-electronic toy to use during the morning free time that is fine. It needs to be small enough to use while sitting at their desk. They will be asked to put it away when morning meeting starts. If this becomes a challenge for some students, they will be asked not to bring in toys in the morning anymore.
I am asking that all students join for morning meeting each day. Morning meeting starts at 8:00, and it is the one opportunity we have to be together as a full class. There will be a link on google classroom to join. This is for remote students and the online cohort to join the in person cohort.
Also please don’t forget that students are expected to be wearing some type of indoor shoes. This is more relevant in the winter time, but something to keep in mind. They don’t need to have a separate pair for outside/P.E. if they are appropriate for both (like sneakers), but outdoor shoes such as boots are not acceptable for inside, and open-toed shoes are not acceptable for outside/P.E. time.
Please download the Remind App on your phone! That is a quick and easy way for us to get a hold of each other. Click on this link remind.com/join/jgoldman1 to be added to the 1/2 class. If you don’t have a smartphone, you can text the message “@jgoldman1” to the number 81010. This is mainly how I will communicate with families! If you were in 1/2 last year this is a new class, so you do have to join again.
I am really looking forward to the start of the school year! If you have any questions, feel free to email me at jgoldman@gisu.org or message me via the Remind App.
Sincerely,
Julia Goldman
